Our Story

A Legacy of Excellence Since 1933

A Legacy Born from Resilience

In 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, Joseph Gann made a decision that would shape generations to come. Working as a watchmaker in Boston's historic Jewelers Building at 387 Washington Street, he found himself without a paycheck when his employer could no longer afford his salary. Rather than despair, Joseph saw opportunity. He opened his own watch repair business in the very same building—and never looked back.

What began as a one-man operation quickly flourished. Joseph worked seven days a week, repairing timepieces for individual customers and jewelry stores alike. When World War II halted watch production, his ingenuity shone through as he kept watches ticking by carefully salvaging parts from older pieces. Word spread about the craftsman who could fix anything, and gradually, Joseph expanded beyond repairs into fine jewelry, specializing in engagement rings and wedding bands.

Three Generations of Excellence

In 1987, Joseph passed the torch to his son Herbert, who had started his career in the store's china department—his father wouldn't let him near the diamonds just yet. Herbert eventually proved himself worthy of the family's most precious inventory, and today, the business thrives under the leadership of his sons, Matthew and Joshua, who represent the third generation of Gann family jewelers.

Through over 90 years and multiple expansions, one thing has never changed: our address. We're still on the fourth floor of the Jewelers Building, where it all began, with skilled craftspeople working their magic in the workshops downstairs.
